Research has shown that when people believe climate change is a hoax, they are less likely to take active steps to reduce their carbon footprint (Butter and Knight, 2017). The same principle applies to intercultural and DEIB initiatives today. If current waves of nativism and xenophobia continue to grow, there may come a time when people withdraw their support for DEIB and intercultural communication efforts altogether!
