We live in a globalized world today. The growing mobility and digitization have turned many – if not most – communication contexts into intercultural systems where people with different backgrounds, values, beliefs and views need to be able to connect, change perspectives and learn together across multiple boundaries. diversophy® games offer excellent opportunities to do so.

The developers’ aim was, on the one hand, to give players the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Switzerland (politics, society, economy, diversity of cultural cohabitation and collaboration systems) while avoiding the promotion of stereotypes. On the other hand, we designed the game contents with the intention of encouraging participants to share their own experiences, stories, habits, values and norms so as to contribute to the development of intercultural communication competences. This card set is neither exhaustive nor are its contents set in stone. The cards reflect the designers’ creativity and selection of specific knowledge. They do not claim to be valid throughout Switzerland - or beyond. The game is meant to be fun and to contribute to lively and enriching discussions. Our idea is also to continuously develop the game further. We hope that the groups who choose this card set will enjoy the game, connect and learn more… not only about Switzerland but also about the different backgrounds, experiences, perspectives and cultural systems of all the players involved. The game was developed through virtual teamwork during the Covid-19 pandemic, which doesn’t stop challenging us all. Thus, the card set is very well suited for online gaming and also for face-to-face interactions.

Developed by Pia Stalder and Intercultural Management Bachelor students from the School of Business and Engineering Vaud (HEIG-VD, HES-SO): Ryan Pochon, Martin Tabasso, Océane Juillerat, Julia Chappuis, Delphine Cuerrier-Fillion, Maxime Porchet, Gilles Arrayet, Yvan Steven Essobo, Maxime Sinnathamby, Nico Bornhauser and Timothée Hungerbühler.

The School of Engineering and Management Vaud (in French Haute Ecole d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud, HEIG-VD) is one of several schools within the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (in French Haute Ecole Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale, HES-SO).

We are a group of students from different cultural backgrounds living in the French speaking part of Switzerland. In 2020, right in the middle of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were enrolled in the course "Intercultural Communication and Management Competences" taught by professor Pia Stalder. Within this framework we got the opportunity to collaborate virtually with diversophy® and to contribute to the development of the country game Switzerland.

Nowadays, we are lucky enough to be able to work with people from all walks of life. It is with the objective to obtain the maximum benefit from this cultural richness that we have created the card contents for this game, which can be played online and face to face.

Our common goal with diversophy® was to produce a series of cards which give an insight in various aspects of Switzerland. We wanted to give the players the opportunity to discover interesting aspects about Swiss politics, history, economy and arts while encouraging them to share their own experiences, stories, habits, values and norms. It was challenging to put ourselves in the shoes of someone who doesn’t come from Switzerland. Nevertheless, while contributing to this card game, we not only learned to adopt other people’s perspectives, but we also gained new knowledge and skills ourselves. It was very instructive for us to experienced virtual international collaboration. We anticipate that the game will continuously be developed further, in particular by people living in the German, Italian and Romansh speaking parts of our country.

Hope you will have fun with some of the cards we’ve created!
