SIETAR Russia & SIETAR Europe Conference
26-28 October 2018
Bridging East and West
This special SIETAR Russia and SIETAR Europa event aimed to open discussions on how to heal wounds between Russia and the West. Two important goals were met: bringing international relations into the intercultural field and bringing discussions from the intercultural space into the field of international relations.
After the end of the Second World War, Europe, and the world in general, was divided rigidly, building physical and mental “walls” between East and West. Many years have passed since that time, and from 1989, together with a globalization process, borders have started to fall, allowing for more and more free movement of people, goods and ideas. Yet, many of the walls that divide East and West stand strong even today.
This division is sometimes used intentionally, to differentiate and dominate. Sometimes it involves different countries and people, then, those parties involved during the Cold War - sometimes it is internalized in people’s perceptions of the world and how they behave toward others.
The conference took 3 days, during which Steve Crawford, Senior Lecturer of Intercultural Communication at JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä, Finland, was invited to presented the diversophy® New Horizons 2020 project. George Simons, consultant, trainer and author, creator of the diversophy® games introduced one of our latest games, Cultural Competence Mini-Game in English and Russian.
